Kaimur has a rich and ancient history dating back to prehistoric times, when the region was inhabited by tribal communities such as the Bhars, Cheros, Savers and Kharwars.
From the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD, Kaimur formed part of the Magadh Empire under the Maurya and Gupta dynasties. Later, it came under the rule of Harshavardhana, the Shail and Pala dynasties, and various local chieftains and Rajput rulers.
In the medieval period, the region witnessed the expansion of Muslim rule under Bakhtiyar Khilji and subsequently became part of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. Sher Shah Suri’s family also had strong connections with Sasaram, while the region witnessed important historical events during the conflicts involving Humayun and Sher Shah.
During the 18th century, Kaimur was affected by the conflicts between Indian rulers and the East India Company, including the Battle of Buxar in 1764. The district also participated in the Revolt of 1857, associated with the wider freedom struggle led by Kunwar Singh in the Shahabad region
